Kpassa, Sept 19, GNA - Scores of New Patriotic Party (NPP) functionaries, including all the District Chief Executives (DCEs) in the Volta Region on Sunday converged at Kpassa in the Nkwanta District to celebrate the party's only victory in the 2004 parliamentary elections in the Volta Region.
Joseph Kwaku Nayan, the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, made history by winning the parliamentary seat in the newly created Nkwanta-North Constituency to become the first NPP Member of Parliament (MP) in the Fourth Republic from the Volta Region.
His party colleagues described his feat as phenomenal and that by his victory he has become the torchbearer to lead the way for the NPP's thrust into the region.
Mr Charles Bintim, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, gave the assurance that the government would show appreciation by rewarding the people in the area with projects. He said the NPP's influence and popularity was growing and dismissed assertions that the party's defeat in two recent bye-elections indicated impending defeat in the 2008 elections as baseless.
Mr Ken-wud Nuworsu, the Volta Regional Chairman of the NPP, said everything would be done to retain the seat in future elections. Mr Kofi Dzamesi, the Volta Regional Minister, said the electrification project in the area would be speeded up and all major towns would be covered soon.
Mr Nayan pledged to use his share of the MPs Common Fund judiciously in the interest of his people who he said made "various sacrifices in terms of time, material and financial resources to see me through".
Ubor Konja IV, Chief of Kpassa in a speech read for him, appealed to the government to create a district for the area.
He also asked for the improvement of health facilities in the area and permanent structures for the police in Kpassa.
