NPP executives are destroying Akufo-Addo's political career - Pratt

Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Junior, says he is worried about the state of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after the Supreme Court verdict on the 2012 election petition.

“I am worried about the state of the NPP because a democratic dispensation can only work with strong political parties. If you look at the figures of the recent elections, NDC is beginning to make progression in Ashanti. President Kufuor won in six regions. Now the NPP is able to win barely in two regions,” he bewailed.

His comment comes in the wake of recent proposals by the leadership of the party for an early congress to elect a presidential candidate ahead of the 2016 Elections.

Some irate young men and women besieged the headquarters of the NPP Thursday, where the National Executive Committee (NEC) was meeting over fresh proposals to prepare the party for the 2016 general election and temporarily disrupted the meeting.

Speaking on Radio Gold’s current affairs programme, Alhaji and Alhaji with Alhassan Suhuyini Saturday, Mr. Pratt blamed the current leadership of the NPP for making the party unpopular.

He blamed Mr. Maxwell Kofi Jumah and the General Secretary of the party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie for the unpleasant happenings in the party, adding that the two persons should not have openly declared their support for Nana Akufo-Addo after the election dispute verdict.

“My understanding of what is happening is that there are some officers of the party who know that they don’t have a chance to be re-elected. The assumption is that Nana Akufo-Addo is so popular and if they can tie their aprons to his, then they can swim along and get elected. For those officers who have taken this posture, I think that they are operating purely from a selfish point of view. In the final analyses, they are destroying Nana Addo’s political career”, he condemned.
