NPP halts primaries in 3 constituencies

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has put on hold the parliamentary primaries in 3 constituencies in the Northern Region to enable its leadership to have further consultations and conduct investigations into several issues that have popped up.

The Savelugu, Karaga and Wulensi constituencies would therefore not be part of the party’s vetting processes, which begins next week, to select qualified candidates to contest the primaries in the various constituencies.

Regional secretary of the party, Salifu Sule, who disclosed this to DAILY GUIDE, said several petitions had been received from these constituencies over certain issues and so the best way to resolve them is to halt the processes and conduct further investigations for amicable resolution.

This way, he observed, the issues at stake would be well addressed for all the stakeholders to be satisfied so that plans by aggrieved parliamentary aspirants that they would go independent would be shelved.

The NPP scribe disclosed that three of the sitting MPs in Tolon, Tatale and Zabzugu are being contested while the rest are going unopposed.

In all, 77 aspirants have filed their nominations to contest in all 31 constituencies in the region, with six being women, including former Minister for Women and Children’s Affairs under the erstwhile Kufuor administration, Hajia Alima Mahama and former DCE for Bole, Elizabeth Salamatu Forgor.

On preparations towards the vetting next Wednesday, Mr Salifu Sule disclosed that three centres had been created to cater for 19 constituencies in the region, hinting that arrangements to vet the rest would be announced later.

Mr. Sule used the opportunity to wish all aspirants the best of luck but reminded them of the need to go about their campaigns devoid of personal attacks and insults, which he noted has the tendency of dividing the rank and file of the party.
