Majority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has argued that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has relatively been charitable to the Ghanaian people in terms of imposing taxes.

According to the Majority Leader, the government has performed better regarding tax imposition than the previous administration.

“This government, in real terms, hasn’t done any major introduction of taxes to burden Ghanaians. Of course, there have been a few taxes that were introduced, but on the scale, we are better off than what we came to do; the number of taxes under the NDC compared to what we came to do.

In fact, for the first time in the history of this country, this government reduced electricity tariffs in 2018,” he stated during an interview on GTV.

He noted that despite the marginal increment in electricity tariffs, the situation would have been worse if the NDC were in government.

Critics of the current government have cited taxation as one of the harsh treatments being meted out to citizens by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led administration.

Former Auditor-General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, speaking at the 2024 edition of his Domelevo Accountability Lecture, accused the government of perpetuating robbery against citizens in the name of taxation.
