Accra, Dec. 8, GNA - The Election 2008 results the Electoral Commission has been releasing appear to be showing that the two major political parties are making inroads into each other's stronghold. Just as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) improved on their performance in Ashanti Region, the stronghold New Patriotic Party (NPP) so had NPP also made significant gains in the Volta Region.

The vote differentials that the NDC obtained over NPP in Election 2004 had been reduced in many of the constituencies in the Volta Region. In 2004 the vote NDC obtained 30,604 more votes than NPP in the Ave-Avenor Constituency but in 2008 it went down to 27,790 votes. In the Central Tongu the difference went down to 16,133 votes from 18,464 in 2004;

Similarly in Ho East it went down from 20,771 vote-differences to 19,795 votes; North Dayi from 29,349 votes to 27,081 votes. Hohoe North followed the trend with the difference going down to 27,816 votes from 32,028 in 2004.

A number of reasons could be adduced for this trend. It could well be that both NDC and NPP have devised strategies to break the backbone of each other. It could also be as a result of the closure of the Ghana-Togo Border, which made it impossible for compatriots residing in Togo to come over to vote.
