Hundreds of supporters of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) stormed the offices of the national headquarters on Tuesday to demonstrate against an affirmative action fiat issued by the national executives committee regarding the party’s forthcoming parliamentary elections.

The party said none of its 16 incumbent female MPs should be contested by men in the primaries scheduled for May this year.

First Vice Chairman of the party, Freddie Blay defended the decision in an interview with Starr News Tuesday.

Hordes of the demonstrators from Ablekuma West, Tema West and Lower West Akyem who thronged the headquarters told Starr News that the affirmative action directive is discriminatory and risks pushing the party into opposition.

Some of them accused their flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo of being behind the directive.
