Dennis Miracles Aboagye, 2024 Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team
Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to establish a "self-protection committee" in response to the violent incidents that marred the recent Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun election.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, July 12, Aboagye expressed grave concern over the perceived lack of official response from the presidency, after more than 24 hours since the violent scenes unfolded.
"With what I saw with my own eyes in Ablekuma, and with what I have seen public officials, including Sam George, a cabinet minister, saying – that they are now about to start – I think the NPP has no choice," Aboagye stated.
"The NPP has a legal committee, an elections committee, and a communications committee. It is only fair that the party quickly reorganises and establishes a self-protection committee," he further elaborated on his proposal.
The Bawumia Campaign spokesperson elaborated,
“We are yet to hear from our presidency. We are yet to hear our president put up even a simple tweet.
Aboagye's remarks come amidst escalating tensions and accusations of politically motivated attacks during the election rerun, which took place in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.
The rerun was disrupted momentarily by violent acts, prompting warnings from media watchdogs and election observers about a worrying trend of increasing hostility towards journalists within Ghana's democratic landscape.
