Incumbent MP for New Juaben South constituency in the Eastern Region has petitioned the New Patriotic Party over what he alleges is an attempt to tamper with the constituency's voters register.

Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah has written to the General Secretary of the governing party, John Boadu, ahead of the primaries scheduled for June 20, 2020, alleging that reports reaching his camp indicate that “there has been an attempt to tamper with the constituency album that will be used for the impending parliamentary primaries.”

“As a candidate in the upcoming election, I have a major interest and therefore implore you to use your good office to ensure that the sanctity of the constituency album that was used in the February 2018 election of the constituency executives is preserved and indeed same is used in the upcoming election," Dr Assibey-Yeboah petitioned.

He also cites aspects of the 2020 parliamentary nomination forms which says “The photo album/register which was used to elect the constituency executive in February 2018 shall be the same album which shall be made available to the National Parliamentary Vetting Committee (NPVC) and the Electoral Commission of Ghana for the conduct of the parliamentary primaries,” and makes the case that this is being breached.

Dr Assibey-Yeboah, who is also Chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee of Parliament, is competing with Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Board, Michael Okyere Baafi, a contest that many have tipped to be keen.

The petition is dated June 12, 2020, and has been copied to the National Chairman of the NPP, Freddie Blay, the party’s National Election Committee (NEC), all members of NEC and the Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
