NPP retains Navrongo seat

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday retained the Navrongo Central Parliamentary Seat when its candidate John Kofi Adda polled 12,200 votes representing 57.9 per cent of the valid votes cast to beat three other candidates in a by-election.

Mr. Adam Mahama Iddrisu, Upper East Regional Electoral Officer, told the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga on Wednesday that Mr Clement Tumfugah Bugase of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 4,929, representing 23.4 per cent of the votes.

Mr Gabriel Pwamang of the Peoples’ National Convention (PNC) had 3,705 of the vote representing 17.6 per cent while Madam Grace Bagomiah of the Democratic Peoples’ Party (DPP) had 241 votes representing 1.1 per cent.

Mr Iddrisu said the total votes cast were 21,933, but the valid votes were 21, 095 because 838 were rejected for various reasons. He said about 50 per cent of the 43,838 voters on the register cast their votes.

The by-election was occasioned by the death of the incumbent NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency, Mr John Setuni Achuliwor in a motor accident on the Kumasi-Accra Highway on January 29, 2003.
