The National Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Joshua Hamidu Akamba has bemoaned what he says is the lack of respect that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has for their late MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko.

According to him, since the Legislator passed on over a fortnight ago, the NPP has not showed reverence for the dead as demands of them by tradition, as members of the party already fighting for who gets the nod to replace the late MP.

Joshua Akamba’s comments follow news that the two wives of the late MP are in somewhat of a tussle over who takes up the seat as MP for the area. A group of youth massed up against the decision by the second wife of the late MP Lydia Agyarko to stand for the upcoming by-elections.

The group says the first wife of the late MP Naana Agyarko must be allowed to stand for the position solely or they would not vote. The youth massed up at the governing New Patriotic Party’s headquarters to present a petition demanding the first wife be allowed to stand for the position.

But the second wife of the late MP, Lydia Alhassan in a statement subsequently said she has never expressed interest in her late husband’s parliamentary seat as she remains in a deep state of shock and mourning following the sudden demise her husband.

Commenting on the issue, Joshua Akamba condemned the jostling for the seat stating that the NDC has rather showed immense respect for the late MP more than his own New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NDC seriously is mourning Agyarko that’s why we’re doing an internal politics quietly as opposed to his own NPP party where people are jostling for his seat even ahead of his body arriving in Ghana and his funeral subsequently held. We know tradition is we’re fully following it, we’re giving late Agyarko all the respect that we need to accord the dead.

He served his constituents not as MP for only NPP members but for everyone in the constituency irrespective of the political affiliation, that is why you don’t hear any noise about our moves to contest the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat. We’re doing it peacefully and according to the laws of the country. Our respect for him will continue until he’s finally buried.
