The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Manifesto Communicator on Health and former General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Koma Jehu Appiah has strongly criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for mismanaging the economy, leading to a massive exodus of nurses from Ghana to seek better opportunities abroad.

He revealed that over 400,000 nurses have left the country due to deteriorating economic conditions, which have effectively reduced their salaries by 60% due to high inflation and exchange rate fluctuations, compared to 2016 when the NDC was in power.

Dr. Appiah lamented that nurses are struggling to perform their duties due to inadequate resources, including basic staff, making their work extremely challenging.

He emphasized that the NDC, under Mahama’s leadership, has outlined comprehensive policies to improve healthcare access, including removing taxes on essential medical supplies for dialysis, ensuring prompt posting of nurses, and implementing initiatives like ‘Onua dɔ’ and ‘Nipa nua’.

These initiatives involve deploying mobile hospital vans to deprived areas, providing individuals with quick access to quality healthcare. Dr. Appiah highlighted the NDC’s commitment to addressing the healthcare challenges faced by Ghanaians, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
