The Electoral Commission (EC) a few weeks ago declared President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress as the President-elect in the keenly contested general elections, but, supporters of the vanquished opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP), are beside themselves with the good showing of their party, especially in the Northern Region.

A section of the supporters of the NPP who spoke to The New Crusading GUIDE over the weekend, stated that, the good performance of the party in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections had vindicated the choice of Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia by Nana Akufo-Addo as his running mate.

“ Undoubtedly, this election has been our best so far in the region under the Fourth Republic and we are very sure that Dr. Bawumia performed creditably well as Nana Addo wanted”, explained some of the supporters.

“You could see that we did not perform well there in the 2008 elections but because of the extensive work Dr. Bawumia embarked on this year, the results is there for all to see”, opined one of them.

The Northern Region which is the home region of Dr. Bawumia had been considered as one of the strongholds of the ruling NDC, however, the NPP incredibly won ten out of the 31 parliamentary seats— an astronomical increase of 7 slots.

The three seats out of the 26 constituencies previously occupied by the NPP were Bimbilla, Zabzugu and Nanton. Although, the party maintained its hold on Bimbilla and Zabzugu, it lost the Nanton one to the NDC.

Surprisingly, the party succeeded in wrestling a number of seats that were won by the NDC in the 2008 general elections, namely: Kpandai, Walewale, Tolon, Yendi, Yagaba/Kubori and Bunkpurugu.

It recaptured Chereponi, a seat that it won in 2008, but lost to the NDC in a by-election in September, 2009 following the death of the then NPP MP, Doris Asibi Seidu.

The NPP candidate, Mr Azumah Sanda, secured 11,680 votes to beat the incumbent NDC MP, Mr Samuel Jabanyite, who polled 10, 565 votes.

The NPP also won one out of the five newly created constituencies in the region, Tatale-Sanguli.

Its candidate, Mr James Cecil Yanwube, obtained 7,037 votes as against 7001 votes secured by an independent candidate, Mr Thomas Borepong Laten. The NDC candidate, Mr Jagri Mohammed, managed to poll 6826.
