Accra, March 4, GNA - The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Saturday congratulated Ghana on the 43rd anniversary of her independence, saying: it is "glad to share with the people of Ghana the happiness of the occasion".

A statement signed and issued by Mr. Odoi-Sykes, National Chairman, read: "while we rightly jubilate for breaking away from our colonial masters into a sovereign nation, there is the need to ponder over achievements and failures during the period".

It said "though Ghana has achieved political independence with the advent of a national flag, anthem and the appurtenances of an independent state, our country has not been able to take control over our economic destiny".

Ghana, it said, is a debt-ridden nation, which is dependent on foreign loans, grants and handouts for survival. "The NPP hopes that this year the people of Ghana will give the party the opportunity to transform their life of poverty and hardship into a life of satisfaction and comfort," the statement added.
