Akwatia, Aug 19, GNA - Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Akwatia exploded into jubilation on Tuesday night immediately after the counting of the ballot in the six polling stations.

When it became clear that the NPP candidate, Dr Kofi Asare, had won the seat, party supporters poured onto the streets singing and dancing but it was cut short due to a curfew imposed on the town.

When the curfew was lifted on Wednesday morning, large speakers were mounted in front of the NPP office blaring party songs with amidst dancing while drinking bar operators cashed in on the celebrations. The town is in a carnival and holiday mood the but the NPP supporters were careful not to stray to areas they consider unsafe, where it is mainly inhabited by die hard NDC supporters.

When the GNA sampled the views of the people, the general opinion was that they could now heave a sigh of relief after the tension and violence that characterized the re-run of the elections.

They noted that before the elections, Akwatia was peaceful and urged all to put the past behind them to develop the town. In the election, Dr Kofi Asare, polled 17,900 votes as against Babel Jamal of the NDC, who had 15,860 votes.
