NPP supporters label MCEs list as 'shocker'
The list of nominees for the various Municipal and District Assemblies in the Upper East Region, which was released by the Ministry of Local Government on Wednesday, has been greeted with mixed reactions.
While some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) expressed dissatisfaction with the nominations, others also jubilated across the 13 assemblies in the region.
Many aspirants that were highly tipped for positions in the various assemblies were ignored.
In the Bolgatanga Municipality, some NPP supporters labeled the list as “shocker.”
Just a few people tipped Ameyure Joseph Atura for the post of Bolgatanga MCE.
Some people said the contest was between Rex Asanga and Alima Musah, both failed parliamentary candidate in 2016 and 2012 respectively.
In Bawku West, many NPP supporters and youth tipped Patrick Ayaaba for the position, but Madam Victoria Ayamga was nominated.
The youth went on rampage and destroyed items belonging to the Bawku West District Assembly, NPP Zebilla Constituency Office and Member of Parliament (MP) for Zebilla, Frank Adongo Fuseini upon hearing the news.
They threatened to cause more commotion in the area if the President does not revoke the nomination of Ms Ayamga.
In Talensi, many NPP members and supporters rooted for Thomas Duanab, who helped the party to capture the Talensi seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2016.
The nominees include Ayinga Bagre Yakubu for the Binduri District; Ameyure Joseph Atura, Bolgatanga Municipality; Ayimbisa Peter Ayamga, Bongo District; David Afoko, the Builsa North District, Gariba Daniel Kwame, the Builsa South District.
The rest are Asare Emmanuel Avoka, Garu-Tempane District, Williams A. Aduum, Kassena-Nankana Municipality; Clement Kuyianyim Dandori, Kassena-Nankana West District; Agnes Anamoo, Nabdam District; Zubeiru Abdulai, Pusiga District; Christopher Boabil Somiteyen, Talensi District; Victoria Ayamga for Bawku West District.
Meanwhile, one of the aspirants who was contesting for the position of the Bolgatanga MCE, Rex Asanga, has called on the youth of the party and his supporters to unite behind the President’s nominee and shun violent acts.
“In as much as I would have loved to be the MCE, the President and the Committee responsible for the vetting know best and for that reason, I will not challenge the decision neither will I hide behind any group of people to fight against the nominee,” Mr Ameyure Atura disclosed.
“Most of you expected to see me as the MCE for Bolgatanga and thus were understandably shocked when this did not happen. This is especially so when most people picked up positive signals regarding the appointment. Now that this is over, I would like to use this opportunity to thank all friends, supporters and well-wishers, especially the many gallant youth, who worked so tirelessly during the 2016 Campaign and have remained very loyal and committed to the party. I urge all of you not to let these temporary setbacks discourage you or shake your love and commitment to the NPP,” he said in a congratulatory message.
