Kwame Asare Obeng, known widely as A Plus, has expressed frustration at supporters of political parties especially the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) perceive active, public-spirited citizens as enemies because these citizens consistently demand that the government do the right thing, and demand accountability.

In a write-up on social media sighted by MyNewsGh.com, A Plus provided instances that when active citizenship achieves results, party supporters rather choose to seek to shame the patriotic, tax-paying citizens who had pressurized government to do what is expected of it.

For him, even when it is clear that politicians are acting for political expediency such as getting things done in an election year so as to get the electorate to think that they are really working for them and vote for them, party supporters still see such as worthy achievements for which their government should be praised and citizens who pushed for action are demonized.

“We live in a country where citizens complain about ambulances for years and when government finally procures them in an election year for votes, their supporters praise the government and count it as part of their achievements but see all those who put pressure on government to procure them as enemies,” he lamented.

He gave an instance of the fixing of streetlights on the Tema Motorway where government is being praised while vocal citizens who called for the repair of the streetlights are being insulted.

“We live in a country where citizens put pressure on government for years to fix streetlights on the motorway and when government finally decides to fix it in an election year for votes, their supporters praise the government and call it a listening government but insult all the taxpayers who put pressure on the government to satisfy its part of the social contract,” he complained.

A Plus found it strange that taxpayers are targeted to be disgraced when after their activism gets government to perform some of what is expected of it.

“Instead of congratulating all the taxpayers who are demanding that the right thing must be done, they rather post photos of the ambulances or work on the motorway, tag you and say “shame, government is working.”

It’s not easy charley…,” he concluded.

A Plus has been an unrelenting critic of the current government after having campaigned vigorously to bring it to power.

Some people have described his constant criticism as a result of sour grapes but A Plus has insisted that whether or not the government ‘rewards’ him as a member of the New Patriotic Party, he will continue to criticize the government and demand that the right thing be done.
