The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government will put up a military hospital in Tamale for the Northern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, Deputy Minority Leader Dominic Nitiwul has said.

Currently, the 37 Military Hospital is the only military hospital in the country.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Sunday October 30 on the NPP’s vision for the security sector if given the nod as the next government, Mr Nitiwul said apart from construction of the hospital, an Akufo-Addo government would provide decent accommodation for soldiers and other security personnel.

“Currently, the Ghana Armed Forces now has three commands. We have the Southern Command, Central Command and the Northern Command. But the Southern Command has the 37 Military Hospital. The Central Command has a hospital being built in Kumasi. We intend to put up a military hospital in Tamale to serve the Northern Command because we have to strengthen them. The army is a professional group of people and we believe it will manage that hospital very well,” he stated, adding: “And, so, we are looking at adding enough men and resources.”

The Bimbilla lawmaker further disclosed: “What is even more critical is providing accommodation for our men who are in the Ghana Armed Forces and this also covers the police as well. There is a programme we call the Barracks Regeneration Programme, that is to ensure that our men and women serving in the forces, we will make sure we give them good accommodation. It’s not good for us as a nation that people who sacrifice their lives for us, people who are willing to die for us, people who are defending us when we are sleeping…we cannot give them good accommodation. That must change and we are going to change it immediately.”
