The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has declared a firm stance against unauthorised billboards and signage placed on the shoulders and medians of roads in Accra, promising a citywide clearance operation.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day on June 20, 2025, Amaliba expressed deep concern over the proliferation of unapproved billboards in the Greater Accra Region.

He has consequently launched an operation to remove unauthorised billboards that obstruct the view of both drivers and pedestrians, following the flouting of a 21-day ultimatum issued by the NRSA.

Leading the exercise himself, Amaliba and his team stormed East Legon in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency to remove all improperly placed signage.

“My men were at Ayawaso West Wuogon to remove signage from medians and other inappropriate locations. They claimed we didn’t collaborate with them, collaborate on wrongdoing?

“We removed signposts from the medians in East Legon. Some people referred us to advertisers, but when we met with them, some said the signage had not been authorised by them,” he stated.

Amaliba reiterated that since the NRSA’s 21-day ultimatum was ignored, the Authority has begun a full-scale removal exercise.

“We’re clearing all of Accra. Every small space is used to erect signage that blocks the view of drivers and pedestrians. Drivers can’t see ahead, and road users are endangered because some of these signs obstruct their view of oncoming vehicles,” he said.

While acknowledging the challenge of limited resources, Amaliba signaled the NRSA’s determination to press ahead with enforcement using whatever means are available.

“I will clear them all—just wait and see,” he vowed.
