NRSC to install speed cameras on highways

The National Road Safety Commission will from August roll out a pilot program to install cameras on some major highways.

This will help track and apprehend persons who flout road traffic laws.

Deputy Director of Research at the National Road Safety Commission, Rudolf Beckley, said the commission will carry this out with the help of the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the police.

Mr. Beckley said the pilot phase will see the installation of six speed cameras on some six different sections of selected roads where users usually flout speed regulations.

He named the roads that would be included in the pilot phase as Accra-Tema Motorway, Accra-Kumasi, Accra-Aflao, Accra-Koforidua and Accra-Takoradi stretch of roads.

He said the cameras are able to capture the speed at which cars travel and when a speed limit is flouted, the camera automatically triggers a response in the form of particulars of the car which are sent to a central monitor which is then relayed to the police and the DVLA for appropriate sanctions to be applied.
