Jennifer Aba Yaa Bonsu, a Nursing student of West End University College was caught in the act of National Service dishonesty by a journalist camera, perpetuating an act which is against the National Service Act 426, 1980.
A couple of months, there were reports of many fraudulent activities about practising nursing students during the National service period at various psychiatric hospitals. In the said video, Jennifer Aba Yaa Bonsu is seen getting the Service Assessment Certificate from Pantang Hospital to start working at the Holy Trinity Hospital without doing the mandatory National Service of 8 weeks at Pantang Psychiatric hospital at Madina.
Many nursing students allegedly engage in similar acts to evade the National Service which is mandatory. This is an example of academic and professional dishonesty in the healthcare industry. As per NSS rules, “Enforcement Team would visit both private and public organizations across the country to ensure that this section of Act 426 (1980) is complied with and offenders will be prosecuted.
Seemingly, some parts of the healthcare system must be restructured and redesigned to ensure that registered Nurses must practice ethically in National Service.
Also, the Midwifery Council must work hand-in-hand with the National Service Secretariat to create a policy whereby Nursing students after passing their final license exams will go out for their National Service attachments before returning to take their final Licensing Certificates from the Midwifery Council.
