NUGS/China warns students against recruitment agencies

Accra, Aug. 25, GNA - The China-based branch of National Union of Ghana Student (NUGS) on Wednesday urged students to be circumspect about recruitment agencies that promise to recruit students to China under the guise of securing jobs and scholarships for them.

Mr Samuel Kwadwo Frimpong, President of NUGS-China in an interview with

"NUGS-China has also noticed that most of these agents do not disclose the actual tuition and accommodation fees to the students, with the fear that if they are made known to the students, they would not embark on the trip," he added.

Mr Frimpong advised students who patronised services of these agents to ensure they cross checked all information provided on the websites of the institutions and if possible write to them for confirmation.

He said currently about 12 students had been stranded in China due to lack of money to purchase plane tickets to return home but with the timely intervention of the Ghana Embassy in China one of them managed to return.

Mr Frimpong said according to Chinese immigration regulations, students were not allowed to teach or undertake any work during their study period, and "when caught, the student would be deported and hence forfeits his or her education".

He cautioned that it was not easy to obtain any scholarship while in China, and therefore appealed to students determined to study in China to ensure all necessary checks were made before leaving Ghana's shores.
