NUGS Condemn Suspension Of UCC Students

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has condemned the decision of the Academic Board of the University of Cape Coast to suspend nine students for their role in the recent student demonstration, which marred the 31st Congregation of the university. The students were given various suspension punishments ranging from three to six years.

In an interview with JOY FM, the NUGS President, Frank Annor Dompreh who has also been suspended described the punitive measures of the university authorities as harsh, adding that NUGS would not take kindly to the suspension He expressed concern that having completed his education, a peaceful demonstration he led in March this year should result in the university authorities withholding his certificate.

He said the attitude of the minister of education, Professor Ameyaw Ekumfi who was also a former pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, is disappointing and expected that he would have made efforts to resolve the impasse.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Education, Professor Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi has expressed disappointment at the reaction of the NUGS President on his suspension from the University of Cape Coast.

In an interview with JOY FM, Professor Ameyaw Akumfi indicated that he had been holding discussions with the leadership of NUGS including Frank Annoh Dompreh. Professor Ameyaw Akumfi said during the discussions he even tasked NUGS to submit an analysis of the results pattern of the University of Cape Coast from 1996 so he could address the central issue of the grading system.

He admitted that even though he designed the course unit system, he denied the claim that he implemented the current grading system of the University. He denied any knowledge of the suspension notice served to students of the University who were involved in the demonstration during the 31st congregation of the University.
