The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for factoring their recommendation in his address to the nation on 31st May 2020.

President of the Union, Isaac Jay Hyde, in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning show, disclosed that in the stakeholder consultation the union had with the President, it recommended that schools should be reopened to final year students amid the coronavirus.

“It is impressive to note that during the President’s address to the nation, all the recommendations given to him were accepted. We will like to use this opportunity to thank him”, he said.

He, however, noted that the Government needed to act in the area of student loans. According to him, NUGS has made a recommendation concerning student’s loans to the Government. But these recommendations seem to have fallen on deaf ears.

“We recognize that COVID-19 has affected a lot of things including the Government’s ability to give loans to students. So we recommended that Government prints the list of beneficiaries to the schools with a follow-up statement of guarantee that shows that these students will receive loans from the Government and should, therefore, be made to register”, he said.

He added that if the Union does not receive any response from the Government, the next action will be a demonstration.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced the reopening of schools for final year students effective June 15, 2020, as part of the easing of restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic. The president disclosed that the easing of restrictions was made in consultation with stakeholders.
