Ahenkro (Ash), March 30, GNA - The National Youth Council (NYC) is to provide skills training to 300 street children and female porters in the Greater Accra Region in the second quarter of the year. The project if successful, will be extended to other regions of the country.
Mr Joe Mantey, National Co-ordinator of NYC, made this known at the African Youth Alliance (AYA)/NYC Challenge Cup Project awards ceremony at Ahenkro in the Afigya-Sekyere District on Monday.
The AYA/NYC challenge cup project is an initiative aimed at using soccer to increase access to adolescent sexual and reproductive health services by the youth aged between 10 and 24 years.
Mr Mantey said the creation of opportunities for the youth was being pursued alongside the provision of skills training through youth leadership training institutes
He said the investment in youth deve lopment would not yield the desired results if the health of the youth was not safeguarded, hence the use of sports to promote adolescent reproductive health issues. Mr Archibald Donkor, AYA Project Manager, said his organisation had invested 788 million cedis towards the project, which was instituted about three years ago in the Ashanti and Eastern regions.
In the soccer competition, the Kumasi team won the trophy and a cash of 300,000 cedis and a football. Other participating teams were from Agona, Atwima and Ahenkro.
