DRAMA UNFOLDED at Agona Kwanyaako in the Agona East District of the Central Region over the weekend when some leading members of the National Democratic Congress( NDC) allegedly prevented the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo Addo, from going to greet them at the annual Akwambo festival celebrated by the people of the area.
The NDC gurus were made up of Minister of Water Resource, Works and Housing Alban Bagbin, National Security Coordinator Nunoo Mensah and Minister of Agriculture Kwesi Ahwoi.
Nana Addo and his entourage including Asamoah Boateng, Professor Dominic Fobih and the Central Regional Chairman of the NPP, Danquah Smith arrived at the durbar grounds at 3:20pm and started exchanging pleasantries with the dignitaries.
But when they got close to the NDC gurus, some policemen were allegedly ordered to stop the NPP leaders from coming to the dais the guru were seated to greet them.
There were two daises, one for the chiefs and the other for the NDC gurus so after being snubbed, Nana Addo and his entourage, dressed in Kente, had no option but to take their seats. The regional chairman, Danquah Smith, who got angry about the situation, started exchanging words with a policeman who was identified as Sammy Barrow.
Most of the people who heard that Nana Addo was around stood up to catch a glimpse of him, whilst others shouted “Nana oo, Nana oo our next president”.
It took the intervention of the police to control the excited crowd who wanted to have a feel of Nana Addo.This probably got the NDC gurus furious, hence their decision to stop Nana from greeting them.
After the incident, the NDC gurus left the place after their speech and did not wait for Nana’s speech with excuse that they had an equally important programme to attend but they were later spotted at Kwesi Ahwoi’s residence chatting.
The paramount chief of the area, Nana Ampem Darko V, appealed for an Information Communication Technology (ICT) center and a police station to reduce the high rate of crime in the area.He further appealed to the government to repair the Kwanyaako main bridge which was in a deplorable state.
Nana Addo, in his address, promised industrialization, free education, among others, to make Ghana a better place to live in.
He also donated GH¢1,000 to the chiefs to support them in the celebrations.
