Nana Addo storms Sekondi

Activities in Sekondi came to a halt over the weekend when the 2012 presidential candidate of New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo visited the city to attend the funeral of the former Sekondi constituency organizer of the party, George Brown Daniels.

The arrival of the NPP leader and his entourage at the Wesley Methodist Cathedral in Sekondi sent the mourners into an ecstatic mood as supporters struggled to shake hands with Nana Addo.

The bodyguards of the 2012 NPP flagbearer had a difficult time controlling the crowd when he entered the Methodist Church and tried to greet sympathizers who were seated.

The mourners, some of whom were clad in the party’s paraphernalia, boldly showered praises on Nana Addo.

They assured him that the NPP will win the case currently before the Supreme Court.

The NPP flagbearer, who was overwhelmed by the rousing welcome accorded him by the mourners, raised his hands to acknowledge the crowd.

Nana Addo was accompanied by NPP bigwigs in the Western Region such as Papa Owusu-Ankomah, MP for Sekondi, Ebenezer Sekyi Hughes, former Speaker of Parliament, Freddie Blay, former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey, MP for Essikado-Ketan, Asamoah Boateng, former Minister of Information and Adwoa Sarfo, MP for Dome Kwabenya.

The rest were Peter Mac Manu, former National Chairman of the NPP, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, MP for Takoradi, Joseph Boahene Aidoo, former Western regional Minister, Joe Baidoe Ansah, MP, Kwesimintsim and Joseph Cudjoe, MP, Effia, among others.

The late former Sekondi NPP Constituency organizer died at the age of 61 after a short illness. He left behind three children.

The late Daniels, popularly called “Uncle Ebo,” began his political career with the erstwhile Action Congress Party (ACP) in the late seventies when Ghana was about to hold elections to usher in the Third Republic.

He was part of the leadership of the Danquah-Busua club that held a meeting in Sekondi to form the NPP in 1992 when the ban on political parties was lifted.

Uncle Ebo was elected the first organizer of the NPP in Sekondi and distinguished himself in that capacity from 1992 to 2009.

Papa Owusu-Ankomah, a friend of the late NPP constituency organizer, in his tribute, described the departed politician as a strong pillar of the NPP in the constituency.

He eulogized the organizational acumen of the late Uncle Ebo, stressing that the vacuum created would be very difficult to fill.

After the church service officiated by Very Rev Abraham Alex Otoo, Supt. Minister of the church, the mortal remains of the late NPP constituency guru was interred at the Ketan Road Estate cemetery near Sekondi.

When Nana Addo was about to leave, the uncontrollable crowd surged forward to escort him amidst dancing and singing.
