Nana Konadu was close to rejoining NDC before her death – Fifi Kwetey

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has disclosed that the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, was on the verge of returning to the NDC before her passing on Thursday, October 23, 2025.

According to Kwetey, reconciliation talks between the party and Nana Konadu had advanced significantly, and they were very close to a conclusion when she died.

“I wouldn’t say the talks were unsuccessful. I would rather say that the timing was the challenge. Because even on her part, you could clearly see that she was ready,” he said after leading an NDC delegation to pay a condolence visit to the Rawlings family on Monday, October 27, 2025.

Nana Konadu, wife of the NDC’s founder and former President Jerry John Rawlings, was a key figure in the party’s formation and the driving force behind the 31st December Women’s Movement, which promoted women’s rights and economic empowerment.

She left the NDC in 2012 following her defeat in the party’s 2011 presidential primary and went on to form the National Democratic Party (NDP). Though disqualified from the 2012 presidential race, she later contested in 2016 on the NDP ticket.

Fifi Kwetey said the party had made deliberate efforts in recent years to heal old wounds and honour her immense contributions to its history and growth.

“We have always acknowledged her pivotal role in building this great party and believed that reconciliation was necessary. I am happy that before her passing, she had embraced these efforts,” he said.
