Nana Osei Agyemang Opambour Re-elected

The Asanteman Cultural Association of Quebec on August 15, 2009 re-elected Nana Osei Agyemang Opambour as the new Asantefuohene of Quebec. There were two other contestants for the position, namely, Nana Boahene and Nana Osei Tutu. Nana Boahene however, withdrew his nomination before the elections.

Before his re-election, Nana Osei Agyemang Opambour served the Asanteman Cultural Association of Quebec with distinction. He joined the association in 1988 and held the position of Secretary from 1988 to 1996. From the year 1995 to 1998, he was the Mmawerehene. He was installed as the Kontihene from 1998 to 2003. From 2003 to 2008, he was installed as Asantefuohene, a position he held until his re-election. His re-election is therefore, an endorsement of the good works Nana Osei Agyemang Opambour has done and continues to do for the Asanteman Association.

Nana Osei Agyemang Opambour intends to use his new mandate to assist in the development of young Ghanaians here in the Canada and to work towards the establishment of Asanteman Community Center in Montreal to be called Asantemanso.

The association also elected a new Queen Mother known in private life as Agnes Serwaa Yanney would now be known and called Nana Serwaa Sikafutro Ampem. She replaces Nana Akosua Dufie Ankrah.

Nana Serwaa Sikafutro Ampem, 51, Asantefuohemaa, was born in Kumasi Suame and hails from Adansi Kusa. Before coming to Montreal, Canada, she attended Old Juaben Secondary School and was among the “Class of 79”. She is richly blessed with four lovely children, Eric, Genevieve, Theresa and Ernest.

Nana Serwaa Sikafutro Ampem’s motivation for ascending the thrown stems from her desire to work towards the progress of Asanteman in the Diaspora and her love to serve her people. Among her plans, she intends to use her new position in society to assist in empowering women, especially the young women and to educate them on Ashanti culture.

The date and time of the swearing in of Nana Osei Agyemang Opambour and Nana Serwaa Sikafutro Ampem would be announced shortly. Other big events lined up to promote the rich culture of the Ashantis include the swearing of allegiance to the Golden Stool scheduled for next year.

Nana Osei Agyemang Opambour has so far received congratulatory messages from Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington DC, Toronto and New York among others.

Nana Osei Agyemang Opambour and Nana Serwaa Sikafutro Ampem would like to use this opportunity to appeal to all Ashantis to bury their differences and see their victory in the recent elections as victory for the all Asanteman. They call on all to come together in unity and work towards the progress of the association. They extend their sincere appreciations to the entire membership of Asanteman Cultural Association of Quebec and ask them for their support.
