National Health Scheme is common pool for health needs

Ho, Dec. 16, GNA- Dr Margaret Kwaku, Ho District Director, Ghana Health Service (GHS), on Tuesday emphasised that the National Health Insurance Scheme, just like any other insurance scheme, would create common pool from which contributors would draw resources for their health needs. She therefore, urged Ghanaians to look at the scheme much more as an "agreement of contributors to help each other in times of sickness and not that of individual contributors having to benefit from it by all means since not all contributors would fall sick".

Dr Kwaku was speaking at a workshop on the health insurance scheme for members of the Ho District Assembly, Chairmen and Secretaries of Area Councils and representatives of other stakeholders in Ho.

She said the scheme is to ensure that people living in Ghana are not excluded from health care for financial reasons.

Mr Francis Kwaku, Presiding Member (PM) of the Ho District Assembly said Members were expected to know more about the scheme than people they represent. He therefore urged them to take the workshop seriously. He asked them to get a copy of the bill and other information on the scheme to enable them to explain issues to members of their various communities.

Mr Kwaku said the scheme was not entirely new to the people since already mutual schemes that catered for funeral expenses of members were in existence.

Mr Prosper Pi-Bansah, District Manager of the Scheme said durbars would be organised in various communities to explain the objectives of the scheme.

Nene Neur Keteku, III, Paramount Chief of the Agotime Traditional Area who presided, observed that if one understood the objectives of the scheme it might not matter, from where the money was deducted.
