Koforidua, Aug. 22, GNA - The National House of Chiefs has completed the codification of the lineage of succession for 19 paramount stools and skins in the country in an effort to fulfil a constitutional provision which seeks to safeguard the integrity of the chieftaincy institution.

The stools and skins selected from the 10 regions formed the first phase of the exercise, which was funded by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany.

The Deputy Registrar of the House, Mr David Sogbordzor, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Koforidua said another 20 paramount stools have been selected for the second phase while the House is to select 30 stools from six regions for the third phase. Funding arrangements have been made, Mr Sogbordzor said adding that the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) was also supporting the project with field staff.

He said the country had about 130 paramount areas but the number could go up as more are being created.

The codification of the customary laws and lines of succession applicable to each stool or skin in the country, which was first provided for in the 1979 Third Republican Constitution was repeated in the 1992 Constitution's Article 272(b).
