The National Security Advisor, Gen. Joshua Hamidu, has dismissed reports that the authorities are questioning a group of people suspected of plotting a coup against the government.
Gen Hamidu told JOY FM that statements he made in an interview with the Reuters News Agency, had been misinterpreted. “ I said if anybody wants to do that he will have to think again because the nation voted the government into power."
"The government has four years to run unless parliament gets the government out. I was just warning those who want to toy with any idea of coup d’etats considering the history of coup d’etats in the country. I did not say that we have arrested anybody involved in coup d’etats,” he added.
The National Security Advisor said precautionary measures have been adopted after the authorities heard rumours about attempts to destabilise the country.
In an interview with Reuters News Agency on the supposed attempts to destabilise the country, Mr. Hamidu is alleged to have said that certain people have been arrested in connection with an attempted coup d’etat.
There has been speculations of coup d’etats in the country following the arrest and detention of the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram (in the Greater Accra Region),Mr. E.T. Mensah for inciting youth of Nima (a suburb of Accra) to demonstrate against the government after the stadium tragedy, which claimed the lives of about 126 people.
