National Security operatives turn land guards?

Ongoing investigations by The Chronicle have uncovered a conspiracy by some faceless persons using an arm of the National Security apparatus, to intimidate a claimant to a parcel of land at Gbetsile (Hallelujah) in the Kpone Katamanso District of the Greater Accra Region.

The said parcel of land is currently being occupied by Cedar Concrete Ltd. A worker at the site, Charles Teye Mensah, was reportedly assaulted by a member of the National Security team last Friday, July 27.

Mensah wanted to know if the team, made up of some armed men from the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) had a court order empowering them to enter the land, His question infuriated the armed men, culminating in the assault on him.

The Emef Police at Mataheko near Afienya, are investigating the assault case.

One Nathan Marfo Gyasi, leader of the group and said to be a National Security operative, when contacted by The Chronicle, declined comment.

According to him, until the reporter furnished him with the name of the one who provided his mobile number to the media, he would not talk.

However, Chronicle sources at National Security who pleaded anonymity, confirmed that some highly-placed persons in the set-up, and not the state, have interest in the land in question and that was why the operation was sanctioned.

Meanwhile, lawyers for the claimant to the land said harassments by powerful state agencies must be condemned, especially in the present era of democracy and rule of law.

They advised interested parties to resort to redress in the courts instead of behaving as though there are no laws in the country.
