Following the government’s failure to pay their stipends, the Concerned NSS Personnel Association of Ghana (CONSPAG) has embarked on a strike action effective Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

The decision, according to a letter dated July 2, 2024, was necessitated by the non-payment of their allowances despite working under unfriendly conditions.

Trainees are currently owed five months' allowances, while graduates from universities are owed three months’ stipends.

The letter also highlighted that National Service personnel had to fulfill their duties on empty stomachs in an attempt not to flout the rules and regulations that state, “Personnel who fail to report at post for three months after posting will be sanctioned.”

The delay in payment of allowances has pushed most personnel into debt, as they explain they always borrow money to work for the required number of days to be qualified for validation for payment of allowances.

Outlining the challenges that necessitated their decision to embark on the strike action, CONSPAG revealed that their inability to pay their accommodation and utility bills and transport themselves to various user agencies, among other issues, brought them to the point of taking drastic measures against the government.

The group has appealed to public and private stakeholders to come to their aid and help push for the timely payment of their allowances.
