National Service personnel to invigilate WASSCE

Government is to recruit personnel from the National Service Scheme to invigilate the ongoing West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) in place of teachers who are still on strike.

This follows the refusal of teachers to call off the industrial action they embarked upon on Monday in protest of poor conditions of service. The leaderships of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) have directed their members to stay out of the classrooms until their concerns were addressed.

Government has subsequently issued a directive to all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, to liaise with the Directorates of Education and the Coordinators of the National Service Scheme at the various districts, to facilitate the release of service personnel to serve as invigilators.

Information and Media Relations Minister Mahama Ayariga disclosed this on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM Wednesday.

Mr. Ayariga gave assurance that with the release of the service personnel, “government is comfortable the WASSSCE would definitely take place” without the teachers.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ayariga has announced interviews for promotion of teachers – one of the concerns of the teachers - will be conducted at all Regional Directorates of the Ghana Education Service from Tuesday, March 26, 2013.

He said the Regional Directors who are currently in Accra, are being briefed on the conduct of the interviews, while other state agencies are handling other parts of the teachers’ grievances.

The Minister was hopeful of a positive feedback from the teachers by close of day today.
