Data collection for the National Identification System (NIS) is expected to start in June this year.

Stephen Asamoah-Boateng, Coordinator, National Economic Dialogue (NED), who disclosed this to The Ghanaian Times in Accra, said that the exercise would commence after the opening of tender bids.

He declined to give the date for the bidding process, saying, “it will start very soon for the project to begin.”

The NIS when completed, would enable the government to know the exact population for planning purposes and for easy identification of Ghanaians. It would also help revenue mobilisation and assist the financial sector to have easy access to clients who may wish to do business with them.

According to Asamoah-Boateng, the NED was still meeting with stakeholders and collaborators involved in the project in order to ensure its success.
