Navrongo (U/E), Nov. 7, GNA- The Upper East Regional Director of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), Mr. Haruna Sulemana has emphasized the need for the youth to show more interest in the Constitution so that they will be in a better position to defend it. He, therefore, urged school authorities to encourage students to join the Civic Education Clubs that have been established in basic and Senior Secondary Schools by the NCCE.
Mr. Sulemana was addressing an inter-schools civic education competition held at Navrongo for students drawn from six second-cycle schools in the Kassena-Nankana District on Thursday.
The competition, which assessed the knowledge of the participants on some provisions of the Constitution, was organised by the District Office of the NCCE in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to select two schools to participate in a regional contest. He commended the students towards the study of the constitution, saying that the aim of the programme is to expose the students to the principles and objectives of the constitution.
An Assistant Director of Education, Mr. Augustine Kaguah, who represented the District Director of Education, thanked the NCCE for organizing the competition, adding that it was in line with efforts being made by the GES to expand its civic education activities in the schools.
He said the GES has a responsibility to ensure that patriotic and democratic values are instilled in students at an early age, as part of the process of building a democratic culture within the communities. Navrongo Secondary School was first with 65 points, and Sirigu Senior Secondary School came second with 60 points. The two schools are to represent the district at a Regional contest to be held on November 27 in Bolgatanga.
The Kassena-Nankana District Director of the NCCE, Mr. Patrick Apaabey, commended the participants for their brilliant performance and urged them not to let the district down at the regional contest.
