Navy Ship Sails From Monrovia With 1,300 Returnees

The Ghana Navy Ship (GNS) 'Bonsu,' sailed from the free port of Monrovia, Liberia, on Saturday June 14, with more than 1300 returnees on board.

The ship, which is under the command of Commander George Anim, is expected to dock at the Takoradi main Harbour on Tuesday, June 17, a release signed by Lt. Col. Yaw Dzotefe-Mensah from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) said yesterday.

The release said a second GNS, 'Anzone' left Sekondi Naval Base on Sunday, June 15, at 1030 hours for Monrovia to bring in more returnees. It said there are reports that about 2,000 displaced persons have gathered at the Ghana Embassy in Monrovia awaiting evacuation.

GNS Anzone, commanded by Commander B.F. Asante is expected in Monrovia by Wednesday morning, the release said. It said a baby girl was reported to have been delivered on board the GNS 'Bonsu' on Saturday night.

The GAF is liasing with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Immigration Authorities for screening all the returnees on their arrival at the Takoradi Harbour, the release said.
