The British High Commissioner to Ghana Jon Benjamin has stated emphatically that Nayele Ametefe- the Ghanaian lady who was arrested in the UK for drug trafficking- was not holding with a Ghanaian diplomatic passport.
The status of the passport Ametefe traveled with has become a matter of major controversy in Ghana following initial reports in the local media that she was arrested at the Heathrow Airport in the UK with a Ghanaian diplomatic passport.
But speaking at an event organised by policy think tank-IMANI Ghana- Thursday, Benjamin said: Let me state here, and now the lady in question did not travel with a Ghanaian diplomatic passport.”
Ametefeh appeared in the Isleworth Crown Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to the narcotics charges levelled against her and asked the Court to sentence her on the same day. Sentencing has, however, been adjourned to January 5, 2015.
She could be given a life sentence or sentenced to at least 10 years.
