2016 flag-bearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has assured teachers in the country of better conditions of service when given the nod to govern this country in the December 7 polls.
Dr. Nduom gave the assurance when he met a cross-section of teachers in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem (KEEA) constituency in the Central Region on Friday, July 22, 2016.
The programme was part of the PPP flag-bearer’s tour in the Central Region to drum home his party’s strong determination to implement the Free, Compulsory, Universal, Basic Education (FCUBE) enshrined in the 1992 Constitution when voted into power.
As an ardent advocate for FCUBE policy, Dr. Nduom stressed the need for the “compulsory” aspect of the policy to be enforced.
According to him, the country’s education must be given the outmost priority, stating that “if we want to be like the advanced countries then we must make education our number one priority.”
“Ghana needs to prioritise its education,” Dr. Nduom affirmed.
Using his life as an example, the astute politician said he was lucky to have had parents who were teachers.
That, he said, makes him appreciate the problems teachers in this country go through.
“Education is very important. It is not everyone whose parents were teachers and has gone through the educational ladder to be where I am today,” he said.
He noted that education has played a significant role in countries that have developed, hence his party’s strong desire to ensure that the FCUBE is implemented as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
“No developed country has gotten to where it is without “free and compulsory” education. But when you come to Ghana we fail to implement what our constitution says,” Dr. Nduom said.
He could not understand why places like the United States of America (USA) has placed importance on her education, but Ghana has failed to do same since the 1992 Constitution came into being.
