Some netizens have descended on the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, over his defence of President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to extend the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Speaking to EIB Network’s Presidential Affairs Correspondent, Abdul-Hanan Adam, Kwakye Ofosu said the decision to extend the IGP’s tenure was based on strong security considerations.

He explained that although government generally discourages contract renewals, the Yohuno case required special treatment.

“As a general rule, the government believes that it helps if we do not have a general flat policy of these renewals, but I’m sure that to every rule there is an exception, and especially because this is a security sector-related appointment… surely a case can be made for allowing sufficient time for his policies to percolate, for his initiatives to come to fruition.”

Kwakye Ofosu has been criticised for justifying the Mahama administration’s move to grant a two-year contract extension to the IGP, despite an earlier policy position that public officers due for retirement would not have their contracts renewed. By the presidency.

Many users, especially on X, argue that the decision contradicts the government’s own directive.

Reacting to Kwakye Ofosu’s explanation, one user wrote, “Kɔtɔ deɛ ne bo dwɛ,” implying that the government finds the decision acceptable only because it favours its own.

Another user commented, “It makes totally no sense. A law or rule should never have an exception.”

A third added, “When we told you the alternative is scary, this is what we meant.”

Others expressed even stronger sentiments, “That’s simply nonsensical.”

“Hypocrites… God will punish you thieves and hypocrites. ‘All animals are equal, but some are more equal.’ Wicked people!”

Another user wrote, “JM is indecisive. We know it. He can’t make decisions for himself.”

Concerns were also raised about governance standards, “Ghana isn’t safe under this government because they will skew the laws to favour themselves. Per the law, this man is supposed to retire, so why the proposal for an extension?”

One user accused the spokesperson of disrespecting the public, “That’s a factual insult! You basically insulted the people.”

Another lamented the lack of consistency in leadership, “Ghana and its leaders! Sometimes you just wonder how they think. So, the President extends the IGP’s retirement, and the best explanation the government spokesperson can give is ‘every rule has an exception’? No consistency, no accountability.”
