Tema (Baatsonaa) Feb. 15, GNA - The Tema Metropolitan Office of the Births and Deaths Registry (B&DR), on Monday, opened a new Office for the Tema West-Sub Metro at Baatsonaa.

The Baatsonaa Office brings to five, the number of Registries in the Metropolis. The first four are the Tema Main, Tema General Hospital, Tema Manhean and Kpone Registries.

Mrs Hannah Twumasi-Ankrah, Tema Metropolitan Births and Deaths Registrar, said the opening of the Office was part of measures to bring the registration closer to the people.

Mrs Twumasi-Ankrah stated that some residents in Sakumono, Spintex, Lashibi and its environs, found it difficult and time consuming, to access the services from the other registries, which were far from them. She said it was also aimed at making the government's policy of compulsory registration of births and deaths in the country a reality. The Metropolitan Registrar called on residents to take advantage of th= e new Office and register their births as well as deaths. Mrs Twumasi-Ankrah disclosed that her outfit recorded a total of 14,31= 6 births, as compared to 15,695 in 2009.

She said the total figure comprised 10,506 fresh births and 3,810 late births, or people over one year old. The outfit she added, also registered a total of 2,167 deaths last year, as compared to the 2,029 in 2009. Mr Romeo Akahoho, and Mr Nathaniel Kyere, Tema West Sub-Metro Chairman= , and Director respectively, emphasized the need to register births and deaths. They were of the view that registration would enable policy makers to get accurate data for the formulation and implementation of socio-economic developmental projects in the country.
