New Teachers in Ashanti Yet to Receive Salaries

Some newly trained teachers who have been posted to certain parts of the Ashanti Region have not been paid their legitimate salaries since the commencement of their work.

These teachers are still living on the "allowance" which they were receiving during their training school days.

The anomaly has already exacerbated the many problems that confront these teachers at the areas that they have been posted to. The teachers who completed their training last year told Public Agenda that they have had to grapple with the situation for that long because their persistent enquiries at the District Education Directorates have not yielded any result. Some teachers say they cannot celebrate the yuletide because already they have been surviving on loans. Others say they have regretted taking to the teaching profession adding that they are looking out for other opportunities. The hardest hit are teachers in the Adansi, Ejura Sekyeredumase and the Asante Akyem districts. The newly trained Teachers in the Ejura Sekyeredumasi said they have not been paid the stipulated, instead they are being paid the monthly allowance of ¢700,000.

When contacted the District Director of Education Nana Basoa confirmed the problem but indicated that his office was seriously working on it. According to him the problem arose due to a delay in the submission of the names of the teachers to the Accountant- Generals Department, adding that the GES is aware of the problem.

He explained that the newly trained teachers failed to complete a form needed at the Accountant Generals office in time.
