New Twist To Despatch Rider's Death

Wed, 5 Sep 2001 Source: Joy Online

As police investigations continue into the accident that led to the death of a Presidential dispatch rider, eyewitnesses are blaming a mummy truck driver and the deceased for the accident. A 63- year old man driving a Mazda pick-up, Vincent Gbewonyo has been blamed for the accident, which occurred last Friday while the president was on his way to Burma Camp for an official function.

Sergeant E. K. Owusu who was leading the convoy died after crushing into the Mazda pick-up being driven by Vincent Gbowonyo, who is also the Volta Regional Chairman of the National Reform Party. He has been accused of refusing to stop and blocking the convoy resulting in the accident.

Eyewitnesses JOYFM spoke to say the accident occurred after the rider overtook at top speed, a mummy truck that had refused to park, and rammed into the Mazda pick-up. According to them, the despatch riders had stopped blowing the siren to notify other road users when the accident occurred and the late despatch rider narrowly escaped another accident a few metres from where he was knocked down.

Meanwhile, police sources say, Mr. Gbewonyo has been provisionally charged with careless driving and negligently causing harm. The Attorney- General’s office is studying the docket for advise on the substantive charges. But concerns have been raised about the swiftness with which the police rushed to arraign the suspect before a community tribunal.

The 63-year old suspect who was also a victim of the accident was denied medical attention, but rather arraigned before a community tribunal barely three hours after the accident. The tribunal remanded him in custody until he reappeared before it on Monday.

The community tribunal remanded him in police custody, but ordered the police to grant the suspect access to medical care.

The family of the suspect protested against his detention at the Police Central MTTU cells, before he was relocated to another cell, where he will not be unduly subjected to torture as feared. According to associates of Mr. Gbewonyo, undue pressure is being exercised because the deceased is a Presidential dispatch rider.

They add that there seems to be an eagerness on the part of the police to see the suspect punished for the death of their colleague. The police, which claim to be investigating the matter, is yet to examine the Mazda pick-up vehicle that was being driven by the suspect.
