Sekondi (W/R), Jan. 18, GNA – Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis has constructed a new landfill site at Sofokrom at the cost of 2 million Ghana Cedis to help forestall the indiscriminate dumping of liquid and solid waste at unauthorized places in the Metropolis.
The project which is 95 percent complete is being sponsored by the World Bank and was started five years ago and was funded by the Nordic Development Fund (NDF).
The Public Relations Officer of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Mr Opoku Boateng told the GNA that the Waste Management Department of the assembly is training personnel to manage the facility.
In a separate interview, the Assembly Member for Sofokrom-Mpintsin Electoral Area, Mr Herociaus Bruce, has appealed to the assembly to sensitize the residents on the operations of the facility.
The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis had faced sanitation management problem for many years because of non-availability of spacious landfill site for disposal of garbage.
The construction of the facility has brought a huge relief to the people of the metropolis, especially residents of Ngyiresia who experienced many difficulties from the disposal of human excreta at their beach for many years.
Mr Issimallah Ishack, the head of the Waste Management Department of the Assembly, charged households to dump garbage in refuse containers placed at the vantage points of the metropolis.
