Manso-Agroyesum (Ash), Sept 28, GNA--For the past 13 months, newly posted teachers to Manso-Agroyesum in the Amansie West district of Ashanti have been receiving allowances instead of salaries.

The teachers contend that this state of affairs is a denial of their right and is imposing hardships on them. The teachers expressed this sentiment at a quarterly meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and the School Management Committee (SMC) of the town to discuss problems facing schools in Agroyesum and how to solve them.

The teachers said the situation seems to be a general malady in the district and appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to speed up whatever documents are being processed before being paid their correct salaries.

They also complained about high rents being charged by landlords in the town and appealed to the PTA and SMC to prevail upon landlords to be a bit more reasonable in charging rent. The PTA and SMC proposed at the meeting that pupils in the primary schools should pay additional 2,500 cedis a year while those in the JSS pay 3,500 cedis.

The proposal is to be sent to the district education office for approval. Mr Kwame Ayensu, the assemblyman for the town said part of the money would be used to renovate the local authority JSS block which is partly damaged.

The Reverend Lawrence Mensah, chairman of the SMC, appealed to parents to invest more in the education of their children particularly the girl-child and appealed to them to visit the schools regularly to know the performance of their children.
