Member of Parliament for the Ningo Prampram Constituency, Samuel Nartey George says contrary to the position of the Electoral Commission, plans to compile new voters register for the country will never see fruition.

In the wake of the release of the electoral commission’s timelines for the compilation of the new voter register, some people especially the National Democratic Congress and other opposition political parties against the new voter register have pointed out some legal issues with the timelines.

They say the timelines given by the EC conflicts with the constitution which requires the register to be ready one month before the elections.

Speaking to GhanaWeb on the legal ramifications of the EC’s timetable at todays “W)kpp3n33” demonstration in Accra, Sam George described the Electoral Commissioner Jean Mensa and her two deputies as a lawless group who think they can rewrite the laws of the nation.

“We have an Electoral Commissioner who is lawless, who has no respect for the rule of law. We have an Electoral commissioner who thinks she is law unto herself, she has a deputy who thinks they can rewrite the laws of this country and say that they don’t answer to the people of Ghana.”

He said the new register the commission seeks to compile will never see the light of day adding that the old register will be the one to be used in the upcoming general elections in December.

“They don’t know, they don’t know the power of the people of Ghana. We will show them the power of the people of Ghana, the Electoral Commission will not do any new register.

Mark it on the wall that register is not going to happen. We are going to vote using the register we used in 2016 and the register we used in 2012. Nana Addo and Mahama, they played home and away one-one. We are going to play final match, neutral venue, same register. We will see the winner.”

The “W)kpp3n33” demonstration follows two others organised in Tamale and Kumasi by the Inter-Party Resistance against New Voters Register. The group is pressing on the Electoral Commission to drop its plans of compiling a new voter role for the December 2020 polls.

During today’s demonstration, members of the group clad in red and black outfits marched from the Kawukudi park at Nima through to the Jubilee House and finally to the head office of the Electoral Commission.

They presented petitions of their request to the presidency at the Jubilee House and another to the Electoral Commission at its head office.

Addressing the demonstrators after the presentation of the last petition, convener of the Group, Bernard Mornah of the PNC called on the EC to heed to the groups call by halting its plans for a new register or have them picket at offices of the commission across the country.
