Newmont builds toilets for communities

Kenyasi (B/A,) May 23, GNA - Management of the Ahafo project of Newmont Ghana Gold has constructed aqua privy toilet facilities for people living in its operational areas. The beneficiary communities of the facilities, estimated at 130,000 dollars, are Hwidiem, Kenyasi Number One, Kenyasi Number Two, Ntotroso and Gyedu. Mr. Stephen Baffoe, Communications Manager, said Newmont remained committed to the sustainable development of the communities within its catchments area. He said the construction of the facilities followed a request from both the Asutifi District Assembly and the traditional authorities. Mr. Opoku Peprah, Asutifi District Chief Executive, said since the government wanted to achieve all targets set in the millennium development goals for which sanitation was a major part it was incumbent on the people to adopt the culture of maintenance to protect the lifespan of the facilities. Nana Twereko Ampem III, Chief of Ntotroso on behalf of the beneficiary communities thanked Newmont for the facilities.
