Newmont hands over block to NVTI

Yamfo (B/A), Aug. 26, GNA - Newmont Ghana Gold Limited on Thursday, handed over a block of three classrooms to the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) at Yamfo in Tano North District of Brong-Ahafo region to enhance technical education in the area.

The construction of the block, estimated at 170 million cedis formed part of efforts by the company to support infrastructure development, while providing basic skills for potential mine construction workers within in its concession.

The Institute will offer technical and mechanical engineering, carpentry and masonry.

Unveiling the plaque to hand over the block to the Institute, Mr Wayne Murdy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Newmont Mining, said the Corporation had identified that there was limited skilled labour in the communities and, therefore, decided to support vocational training programmes in the area.

He said the Newmont was also determined to ensure that people living in mining communities, particularly the youth would be employed to enhance their standard of living and appealed to the people to co-operate with the company.

In a speech read for him, Mr G.F Yevu, Acting Director of NVTI, said the youth needed special training to enable them become creative and independent.

He said it was significant to provide vocational and technical training for youth to enable them to contribute meaningfully to the national development.

Mr Yevu advised parents in to enrol their children at the Institute to help solve the unemployment problem thereby reducing poverty. He commended the mining company for contributing to the development of education in the area.

Mr Colin Maddock, Newmont's Ghana Training Manager, said programmes to be run at the Institute would prepare trainees to work in an industrial construction environment.

Mr Yaw Adjei Duffuor, Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister commended Newmont for living up to its social responsibility. 26 Aug. 04
