Nigerian arrested for illegal waste dumping and extortion

A 32-year-old Nigerian national, Yusif Dahiru, has been arrested by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for allegedly engaging in illegal waste dumping and extorting money from the public at an unauthorised dumping site near UTC in Accra.

According to a report by adomonline.com, Dahiru was apprehended around 3:00am on Monday, April 15, 2026, following a tip-off.

The AMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, said the suspect had stationed himself at the site and was collecting refuse from residents while posing as an official waste manager.

“The suspect allegedly collected money from unsuspecting members of the public under the pretext of offering waste disposal services and claimed he was working for a supervisor,” Ankrah stated.

During interrogation, Dahiru denied being an authorised waste collector but admitted to assisting residents by transporting refuse to the site in exchange for payment.

The AMA has cautioned residents to remain vigilant and report unauthorised waste disposal activities to help curb environmental abuse in the city.
