Nigerian remanded for using cutlass on ex-wife

Tema, Sept. 28, GNA - A Nigerian, who butchered his ex-wife with cutlass at the woman's room at Coastal Estate, near Sakumono, has been remanded by the Tema Circuit Court 'B' when he was arraigned before it.

Abubakari Salifu, driver, pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing unlawful harm, and will re-appear on October 10.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Edith Nutakor told the court presided over by Mr Stephen Teye that on August 27, at 1600 hours, the complainant was in her house when two of her children from a previous marriage, staying with their father, visited her.

Chief Inspector Nutakor said at about 1900 hours on that same day, the accused person stood at a distance and called to his children, the complainant questioned him (accused) why he was shouting at the top of his voice during the night.

The prosecution said this annoyed the Nigerian, and he started to rain insults on her ex-wife.

Chief Inspector Nutakor said this resulted in exchange of words, during which the accused person forcibly dragged the children away. The prosecution said shortly afterwards, the accused person returned to the house with the excuse that he was searching for the sandals of one of the children.

Chief Inspector Nutakor said the accused person attempted to enter the room of the complainant's husband, which she prevented. The prosecution said subsequently, the accused person slapped the ex-wife and she fell down.

Chief Inspector Nutakor said the accused person later picked a cutlass in the room and inflicted several wounds on the complainant's back, buttocks and palm.

A report, the prosecution said was made to the Sakumono police, who issued a medical form to the victim to attend hospital. Chief Inspector Nutakor said when arrested later, the accused person in his caution statement, stated that the complainant hit him with the cutlass, and in an attempt to seize it from her, she had a cut on her palm.
